Requirement gathering enables COTS success

Commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) is a term for software or hardware, generally technology or computer products, that are ready-made and available for sale, lease, or license to the general public. COTS packages are expensive, time consuming and risky to implement. Organizations are investing a great deal to buy, customize, integrate COTS systems and adapt business processes. All the while, studies have demonstrated that less than 50% of COTS implementations are successful.

In response to this situation, IT organizations have determined the need for and defined the value of augmenting strategic planning efforts with an assessment of the existing IT architecture and supporting business environment, as well as the COTS applications and the related custom code.

Overview of COTS requirements

eCube has the tools and expertise you need to successfully prepare for the selection of a new COTS package. Experience shows that deploying a new COTS package is complex, requiring companies to determine:

  • Functional redundancy and gaps between the existing solution and the targeted COTS package
  • Required changes to existing application interfaces in relation to the package interfaces
  • Current-to-target mapping and related migration of data to the COTS data architecture
  • Analysis and possible retooling of business processes and related user-based systems
  • Phased deactivation of selected application functionality and deployment of the new COTS package functionality

With this information in hand an IT organization can make more informed choices as they select COTS packages and develop implementation plans
