Legacy Modernization

If you have an obsolete infrastructure, probably it is time to modernize it.

There are different approaches to legacy modernization and we can help you choose the right path to modernize your legacy system. Legacy system modernization is often a large, multi-year project. Legacy systems are often critical in the operations of your company. Therefore the migration process must be executed carefull to avoid unacceptable level of operational risk.

There are different options about for legacy modernization – each of them with advantages and disadvatanges.

  • Migration: Migration of languages (3GL or 4GL), databases (legacy to RDBMS, and one RDBMS to another), platform (from one OS to another OS), often using automated parsers and converters for high efficiency. This is usually quick and effective, but not always can be adopted.
  • Re-engineering: in this case we rebuild the legacy application usign a new technology or platform but keeping the same functionality. This is usually the most effective way to to legacy modernization.
  • Re-hosting: in this case you run the same legacy application on a different platform. It happens most of them on mainframe applications and it is often used as intermediate step.
  • Package implementation: in this case you replace the legacy applications, with off-the-shelf software (COTS) such as ERP, CRM, SCM, Billing software.

A modern company should be constantly updating to all the changes in the business field and should be able to modify the application it buys without major problems.

Re-implementing applications on new platforms can have different benefits: can reduce operational costs, increase features as as web services and integrated development environments.

After the legacy modernization, the appllications can be updated more frequently increasing their efficacy for business needs. In fact the new technologies have most of the time access to features that old legacy system don’t have. The legacy transformation process therefore becomes a cost-effective and accurate way to preserve legacy investments and thereby avoid the costs and business impact of migration to entirely new software.

The goal of legacy modernization is to retain the value of the legacy asset on the new platform.
